7 Habits of Highly Successful Salon Owners
Successful salon owners make it look so easy. How do they do it? What makes them so successful?
1. Successful salon owners take care of themselves
People who don’t take care of themselves can’t expect to take care of anyone else. Successful salon owners know that clients and staff suffer if their performance is not top notch every day, so they make sure they get their beauty sleep every night, eat enough fruit and vegetables, and get enough time away from work to do things that they enjoy doing.
When they do, everyone benefits.
2. Successful salon owners keep it together
Being organised is about being realistic, like making time in a busy calendar for the things that need doing. Successful salon owners need to concentrate on their activities and enjoy minimum interruptions, so they commit to certain times for specific tasks, and stick to it. For example, their daily agenda will have time set aside for meetings, business planning, and other activities not involving staff and clients.
Successful salon owners minimise hat-switching as much as possible and work in dedicated time or task blocks. They’re disciplined and stick to their plan.
3. Successful salon owners make time for their team
Any good leader knows that their team is the heart of the business. If the team is not happy, clients are going to be affected. Good leaders make time to support the needs of their team… then expect them to get on with the job!

4. Successful salon owners cut the crap
Observe a successful person some time. They won’t waste their time doing things that don’t get them results. That’s how they are able to do all of those “I wish I had time for” activities that you and I dream about.
Successful salon owners have a variety of entrepreneurial skills that keep them on top.
5. Successful salon owners systemise and automate to save time
We’re in an age where there are so many exciting and useful tools available to us, and successful business owners use this to their advantage. They harness the power of the internet and cloud-based software to make their work easier. Tech systems save both time and money by automating many of the things that take up valuable time.
6. Successful salon owners inspire their employees
70% of employees are not engaged in their workplace, states Forbes magazine. What impact do you think this has on clients? Successful salon owners know that it makes sense to invest time and energy into inspiring their employees.
Do you know what makes your team come alive? When was the last time you saw a sparkle in the eye of each employee? Sometimes all it takes is ensuring they get to do the things that they feel inspired or passionate about. Keep in mind that you can’t keep everyone happy all the time. If you’re aiming to inspire 80% of the people 80% of the time, then you’re doing a great job.
7. Successful salon owners work for tomorrow
When successful salon owners make lots of money, they do so not because they want to enjoy the finer things in life, not because they know they deserve to make more than everyone else. They see it as their responsibility to run their businesses with tomorrow in sight. They see it as their responsibility to protect the future of their team, clients and themselves.
In the early days of having my business I thought profit was what I got to take home and spend on cool stuff. To my shock and horror, I later realised that my profit was also the stuff I had to put back into my business to grow. I had to use it to buy new things for the business and invest in the future of my business. If I took it all, there would be no tomorrow.
